Runecast Analyzer release v1.7.1
Runecast has released a new version of its proactive issue monitoring tool, version 1.7.1. This release brings "Knowledge Definition" updates (a slick mechanism enabling rapid updates for all new/updated vSphere and vSAN knowledge). Previously, users updated the virtual appliance with each new release (including knowledge definitions) meaning a slower release cycle for updates.
Starting with version 1.7.1 the Analyzer offers a new "zero-touch" online and "lightweight" offline process for more...07-03-2018 00:00

How to avoid PSOD - VMware Purple Screen of Death
The Purple Screen of Death (PSOD) is a fatal crash of VMware ESX/ESXi hosts which kills all active Virtual Machines. With highly virtualized data centers, microservices and technologies like Docker, a single PSOD can terminate tens, hundreds or even thousands of underlying services. Some PSODs can be hardware-related, but most of the time they are due to a combination of problematic drivers, BIOS or software bugs (assert errors). Taking measures to proactively detect (anticipate) and resolve these issues can do a great deal in preventing PSOD outages.

Sometimes a simple tool is the most powerful one. If you are VMware admin who has to fix problems with no access to the internet, you probably know it is a pain to Google error code or keyword from your phone and hope you will find the right article with a solution soon. And of course, it is so slow and boring to do it repetitively.
We at Runecast believe it is worth to support virtualization community and make engineers and administrators life easier. Let's skip conversation with your manager about ROI, budget or severity and simply download our more...17-01-2018 00:00
Where are we with Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities in VMware environments
Since these vulnerabilities were publicly disclosed, there have been several articles(Security Advisories and KBs) and recommendations on how to patch VMware environments. Some of the updates are overriding the initial ones and some are adding more details. Naturally, with so much information flying around and the pressure to mitigate these critical vulnerabilities as soon as possible, there is some level of confusion to what needs to be done.
The status, as of the time of this article (January 16th 2018 11:00 UTC) is as follows:

VMworld 2017 - it is all about networking
VMworld is all about networking.
And we did a lot of that! Certainly, there are the tech sessions, labs, keynotes. But year after year I realized that the most valuable thing VMworld brings is networking. The human contact. Smart people meeting face to face, sharing information, ideas and experience (often over a drink or two).
I didn't want to make this yet another long VMworld recap. It can take pages to describe this intensive experience with all the people we met and all the announcements that were made. So I will try to keep it short more...25-09-2017 00:00
vRealize Orchestrator Plug-In for Runecast Analyzer released!
I remember when vRealize Orchestrator (or vCO as we used to call it) was described as the hidden gem in your vSphere. I would still say it's a gem, but not so hidden anymore. Ever since vRA came along, the importance and adoption of vRO grew significantly.
What does vRO have to do with Runecast Analyzer? A lot, actually! Especially ever since we released the initial REST API (in version 1.5.4). We have since enriched the REST API and you can do pretty much everything on Runecast programmatically via the API. Now, what about those of more...
Runecast Analyzer 1.6 is here! Integrations and Security are key!
vSphere Web client plugin - love it or hate it, the vSphere Web Client is here to stay. It now comes in HTML5 version and will only keep improving. The Web Client is still the main point of control for any VMware administrator. That's where admins can see and operate with all their hosts, virtual machines and other inventory objects. It is also a great place where they should be able to also see potential risks or incompliances. Although admins can always open the Runecast Analyzer more...25-08-2017 00:00
Runecast API Boost

This allows for more complete integration, advanced queries for specific issues or objects, filtering, adding/removing vCenter Servers, managing licenses etc. You can test each of them via the swagger interface under Settings -> more...08-08-2017 00:00

Year in review
Looking back at 2016, we see a year that has brought many global changes. If we wanted to summarize what this year was all about for Runecast - it would be: develop, sell, expand, repeat.

We are announcing a new Notes feature as part of Runecast Analyzer v22.214.171.124 released last week. Now admins can easily annotate any KB issue, Best Practice and Security Hardening. This brings a new way to customize your Runecast Analyzer and enrich the analysis results. Until now, you could add notes only to the Filters you create, when you disable issues reported on the whole environment or just subset of the inventory. But what if you need to mark an issue without filtering it out completely?
Here is a typical use case:

ESXi 5.x fails with PSOD when using E1000 or E1000e adapters!
E1000 and E1000e are quite commonly used virtual network adapters for VMs in vSphere. Although VMXNET3 is the VMware recommended adapter, E1000 and E1000e are feasible alternatives.
- E1000 is an emulated version of the Intel 82545EM Gigabit Ethernet NIC.
- E1000e is an emulated version of the Intel Gigabit NIC 82574 Ethernet NIC.
Be aware that using either E1000 or E1000e on an ESXi 5.x host can pose a serious danger, depending on your host patch level.
